Behind the Name: An icon of Sanibel and Captiva Islands, the brown pelican eats by diving full speed and crashing into the waves. Its pouch can hold up to three-gallons of water, so it can catch multiple fish with each dive. A white pelican is a migratory bird that visits during the winter from Canada, Minnesota, Montana and Utah.
